What is a Portable Cabin?

A portable cabin is a type of portable building. Portable buildings, also known as “transportables” or “demountables”, are structures designed to be moveable from place to place rather than fixed to one location. A portable cabin – also known as transportable cabin – is similar in design, but usually smaller and lighter in weight than a classroom or construction site office.

Portable cabins also tend to be a bit nicer – they are usually furnished with more homely trimmings such as carpet and LED lighting and may also include modern kitchen and bathroom facilities more designed for relaxed living or holidaymaking than purely utilitarian purposes.

Portable cabins are a popular choice for holiday homes or backyard additions because they don’t require a concrete foundation and can be relocated if needed. Smaller portable cabins can be affixed to a trailer, meaning they don’t require a crane and a flatbed to transport. These types of transportable cabin can be towed by any vehicle with enough pulling power.

In a pinch, a transportable cabin can be a quite suitable home given the right location and access to power and water.

Portable Cabins NZ

Living in New Zealand can be tricky given the housing bubble, and many people of all ages are finding they simply can’t afford to buy a house. Rental demand can be a shocker as well, and with public housing in short supply, it puts all us Kiwis in a tricky spot. Are portable cabins NZ the answer?

Absolute Tiny Houses NZ has seen an increased demand for custom transportable cabins since we started business. While there are lots of factors, portable cabins NZ offer many benefits for New Zealand people:

  • Housing – while there are pros and cons, in the scheme of things transportable cabins make for a good housing choice. You don’t need a concrete foundation, you don’t need steel or timber framework, you don’t need bricks and mortar, and you don’t even need a big block of land. Additionally, the small carbon footprint and decreased utility usage results in less expenses and less stress. The best part – even a larger portable cabin NZ costs less than 10% of the average New Zealand house price.
  • Temporary accommodation – let’s say you are lucky enough to have a block of land to build a house on. Did you have to sell your old house to finance it, and are you planning on bunking with the folks or someone else? Why not use a portable cabin instead? Put the cabin on your block and live there while you build. There are many more use cases as well – family live overseas and want to come visit? Have a teenager with inflated privacy needs? Maybe you want to help out a mate that’s doing it tough. Portable cabins NZ are a great solution for all these situations without the costly investment of building an extension or separate structure.
  • Holidaying – portable cabins built on trailers are just like caravans, just with more living space. While you might get a bit stuck trying to squeeze one into the local caravan park, you could take your cabin anywhere space will allow. Aside from this, have you always dreamed of having a holiday home? A transportable cabin is a much better solution than a complete house build. Get the block, get the cabin there, and you’ve got a pre-packaged holiday house ready to go – just plug in power and water.

The list could go on, but it’s worth taking a fresh look at any situation with portable cabins NZ in mind – you might be surprised just how good a solution they can be.

Should you buy a Cabin?

All this being said, it’s worth bearing a few things in mind when considering cabins for sale NZ.

  • Required space – first things first, do you have the room? Because unfortunately, you can’t park portable cabins on the street or in your driveway! You will need to ensure your new transportable cabin can live on privately owned land. If you plan on using public land, you’ll need to obtain full permission from the council first, and even then, you may not get much time. If you don’t have your own land, a generous friend or family member is your best bet.
  • Transportable or fixed – the big question here is if you are going to build it on a trailer or as a standalone. If you build it on a trailer, your portable cabin won’t fall under the New Zealand building code (it’s legally considered the same as a caravan). If built as a standalone, as long as it’s still 100% moveable you shouldn’t have much trouble. But as soon as you permanently affix it, it is classed as a separate structure and falls under the Building Code, requiring all the necessary permits and minimum construction standards.
  • Intended use – this relates to the prior point, but your intended use of the transportable cabin will have an impact on whether it falls under the Building Code. The best way around this is to ensure it remains able to be moved, or better yet, build it on a trailer.
