According to the Dalai Lama, ‘Sleep is the best medication.’
According to NZ mums, backyard sleepouts are sanity savers.
Absolute Tiny Houses are creating bliss and harmony across New Zealand
;We’re all familiar with the classic sleepout, often in a converted garage attached to the house or in the backyard.
In reality, Sleepout cabins create peace and harmony in families and households everywhere. Whether it is for a teenagers den, a visitors bedroom, a quiet space, a noisy space, a music room, an art studio, a he-shed or a she-shed, the escape pod or a chill zone, Sleepouts are creating more living space and versatility in our lives.
The cool thing about Sleepouts is that their function adapts with you as you and your family’s needs change. For example; once, you no longer need your teenage den you can convert your Sleepout to an art studio or a granny flat. The possibilities are endless.
A Sleepout that’s detached from your house is becoming more common. Rather than being a converted garage or cabin fixed to a foundation, a portable Sleepout is a standalone construction built in a way that makes it easy to transport. A portable Sleepout is taking the Sleepout to a whole new level.
One of our specialties is portable Sleepouts NZ. We build your Sleepout on a registered trailer. This build makes it very convenient if you need to move at some point in time and don’t want to leave your sleepout behind. If on the other hand you prefer your Sleepout on skids (timber blocks) or foundations, we can do that too.
Our Sleepout cabins are designed for your needs. If you need a bedroom and living space, we can do that. If you want your Sleepout with bathroom and kitchen facilities, we can do that too.
To keep your Sleepout truly portable, you can’t permanently plumb it in with water or power. We set it up in the same way a caravan is connected to power and water. You can still plug in to modern essentials by plugging into the house power and water supply. You can go the next level and add solar power and, compositing toilets and rainwater tanks to be fully independent.
All of this means you avoid having to deal with red tape of the New Zealand Building code, entirely. We do however recommend you get in touch with your local council about their rules and regulations regarding services.
Our smallest option for a Sleepout cabin is 10m2 and starts at just $29,990 and comes with a completely finished interior including power points, lighting, internally finishing (walls, ceiling and flooring) and window and lockable door and a magic open space to set up as you wish.
Our self-contained Sleepouts NZ are designed to be fully transportable. You have the option of building on a warranted and registered tandem axle trailer for the ultimate in portability or if portability is not important, on skids (timber bearers) or foundations.
If you want to go bigger and add some amenities check our self-contained cabins. What’s more, you can choose a solar off-grid setup, rainwater tank, grey water filtration system and a composting toilet for the ultimate eco-friendly, stand-alone alternative.
One of the big advantages of a fully portable Sleepout is that when it is no longer required, you can sell it and gain your backyard back.
Absolute Tiny Houses NZ has a comprehensive range of Sleepouts for sale that are fully customisable to suit any need or situation. Whether it’s a quiet spot for your own sleep (perhaps escaping a snoring partner) and gaining good sleep or a teenage sleepout, we will make the design meet your needs.
The options and design choices are plenty. You can choose a simple and compact one-bedroom setup, or you can step it up with extra living space, loft designs, and even the option to have multiple bedrooms is available.
At Absolute Tiny Houses NZ we offer sleepouts for sale and have pre-configured options to choose from, but all designs are fully customisable. You can optimise the space based on the needs of your guests.
Sleepouts are traditionally a single room. At Absolute Tiny Houses we are happy to give you choices as to where do you want your window, door, power points, and lights. Along with what colour theme are you looking for. After all, you know how you want to use the space more than we do. Furthermore, you have choices for paint colour, flooring, feature colours and external colour. Your colours, your vibe.
If as we work through your needs and design choices, you may think that the 4.1m cabin, might just be too small, or you decide that you want to add a toilet and hand basin. If so, you are starting to look at our small self-contained cabins which give you an extra 1.9m in length, over the 4.1m Sleep out.
There are a couple of ways to get started. We recommend you jot your ideas down.

If you choose our transportable Sleepout vs one built on foundations, it is built on a warranted and registered trailer. On build completion it is towed to your location. These by definition are a portable Sleepout. Your power supply is connected via a standard caravan plug that you can plug into your home. If you set up your toilet and water systems in the same way a caravan is setup you remain portable. To be clear, it is transportable. However, it is not designed to go everywhere like a caravan.

Our fixed cost build contracts start at NZ$29,990. For $29,990 your sleep out has a completely finished interior including power points, lighting, internally finishing (walls, ceiling and flooring), a window and lockable door and a magic open space to set up as you wish.
It takes approximately 2.5 months from build start date.
Traditional, sleep-outs are not self-contained, so technically they are not for permanent living. However, may people use a traditional sleep out as an extra bedroom, while still using the facilities of the main house.
Benefits of Sleepouts are numerous. Primarily, a sleepout is extra living space to meet your personal needs. Their uses can change and adapt with your lifestyle. A big advantage, is that when you no longer need your sleepout, providing it is portable you can sell it and regain the space. Alternatively, you could combine it with a self-contained cabin as an extra room in your downsizing plan.
